Shigehiro FUKUSHIMA

Shigehiro Fukushima was born in Kumamoto, Japan, in 1948. He Received the B.S., M.S., and D.E. degrees in electrical engineering from Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan, in 1971, 1973, and 1983, respectively. In 1973, he joined the Air Traffic Control Systems Division at the Electronic Navigation Research Institute, a subsidiary of the Japanese Ministry of Transportation. Since 1974 to 1989, he was with the Department of Electrical Engineering, the Kyoto Institute of Technology, Kyoto, Japan. Since 1989 to 1997, he was an associate professor at the Faculty of Computer Science and Systems Engineering, Kyushu Institute of Technology, Iizuka, Fukuoka, Japan. Since 1997 to 2003, he was with Kyushu Institute of Design as a professor at the Unit of Auditory and Visual Communication Sciences, the Graduate School of Design. Currently, he primarily serves for Kyushu University, where he is a professor at the Unit of Information Environment Study, the Department of Art and Information Design, the Faculty of Design. He also serves for Kyushu University at the Unit of Image Engineering, the Graduate School of Design.

He started his academic career in biomedical engineering. He has been involved in biomedical image processing and pattern recognition, image processing systems development, computer graphics, computerized tomography, blood flow measurement, and neurobiological signal processing. He is becoming more concentrated on computer vision with application to machine understanding of medical images, outdoor scenary, and images for the study of humanities.
