Lecture at Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art: “What are the issues with pictograms that we need to consider from the perspective of inclusive design?

Starting with the pictogram issues faced by the Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art, I spoke about the various challenges facing pictograms and research trends.

Background: The Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art created a new pictogram for the 2023 renovation of the museum, combining the shapes of the museum building designed by architect Kisho Kurokawa. The pictograms for people were designed to avoid the conventional stereotypical “female” and “male” symbols, but there were comments that the pictograms were “difficult to understand” and “misidentify men and women”.
