基盤研究B「近代日本カトリック教会建築史の研究: パリ外国宣教会所管地域を対象として」2025-2028年度
19世紀から20世紀前半にパリ外国宣教会が日本で所管した地域を対象に、近代日本のカトリック教会建築の通史的な展開を研究しています。教会建築がどのように展開したのか、その理由と背景は何か、宣教師の本国フランスを含むヨーロッパの動向とどのように連動していたのかを解明します。建築学的な考察に加え、パリ外国宣教会や福岡教区に所蔵される書簡等の一次史料を、国際共同研究として調査・解読しています。
基盤研究C「新発見のカトリック福岡教区資料を用いた戦前期教会堂建築の研究」2022-2025年度
カトリック福岡教区が所有する戦前アーカイブ史料を研究しています。現在は失われている教会堂などの建築がどのようなものであったかがわかる史料が多数発見されました。これまでの成果は、Publicationsページの論文を参照ください。1927年に設立された福岡教区が福岡・熊本・佐賀県でどのように宣教・教育・社会福祉活動を展開したか、また、戦時中に教会が置かれた厳しい状況も史料から知ることができます。研究に加え、史料の目録作成、デジタル・アーカイブ、紙史料保存措置もおこなっています。

As a member of the advisory committee for the works, I carry out historical and architectural research on Imamura Church and provide professional advice.

Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), “A Study of the History of Catholic Church Architecture in Modern Japan: Focusing on Areas Entrusted to the Paris Foreign Missions,” FY2025-2028
This project traces the overall development of Catholic church architecture in modern Japan, focusing on the areas entrusted to the Paris Foreign Missions Society from the 19th to the early 20th century. It asks how church architecture developed, for what reasons, and how it was connected to trends in Europe including France, the home country of the missionaries. Alongside architectural analysis, primary sources such as letters held by the Paris Foreign Missions Society and the Catholic Diocese of Fukuoka are surveyed and read through international collaboration.
Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), “Study on church buildings in the pre-war period using the archival materials held at the Catholic Diocese of Fukuoka,” FY2022-2025
A collection of documents and drawings from the early 20th century was recently discovered at the Catholic Diocese of Fukuoka, Japan. The collection includes drawings of church buildings, which do not exist today. The archival materials reveal what the church buildings were like, as well as the Church-State relations during the war.
