International Symposium on
Tourism for Sustainable Society based on wise use of Rural and Urban Resources
本シンポジウムは、ツーリズムの本質 に迫り、自然環境と文化遺産のワイズユース（持続的活用）による都市と農山村の新たな交流、そしてそれらが導く美しく持続的な循環型共生社会の構築をテー マに、英国と九州での取り組みの報告を受け、今後の展開について討論します。

■趣 旨
　わが国では，里山や棚田，歴史的な集落・町並みなど豊かな自然環境や文化遺産に恵まれた農山村が過疎に直面する一方，人口が過密する都市では，自然や地 域文化に触れることもなく育つ子供，化石燃料への依存が招く地球温暖化，食糧危機の不安などの問題に直面しています。そうしたなか20世紀の石油に代わる 21世紀のグローバルフォース（世界を変える力）はツーリズムであると言われています。

　本シンポジウムでは，このツーリズムの本質に迫り，自然環境と文化遺産のワイズユース（持続的活用）による都市と農山村の新たな交流，そしてそれらが導 く美しく持続的な循環型共生社会の構築をテーマに，英国と九州での取組みの報告を受け、今後の展開について討論します。

Purpose
Although rural areas in Japan used to be covered with rich natural landscapes such as satoyama forestlands and terraced paddies as well as such cultural heritages as historical villages, these days the particular regions have been losing populations dramatically.  On the other hand, cities have had their own issues, too.  For instance, population density in cities is enormously high, and children are raised without being acquainted with the taste of rural nature and cultures.  What is more, cities, which are highly dependent for food and fossil fuels on abroad, are believed as the main causes of the global warming and the possible food crisis in a near future.  In such an urgent state, it is considered that fossil fuel, defined as a global force of the twentieth century, must be replaced by tourism, as that of the twentieth first century and that the new force must be a plausible solution to our devastating earth.
Our symposium will attempt to examine the following three themes and confer our future vision, based on the reports of our previous and ongoing works done both in the United Kingdom and in Kyusyu, Japan.

I.    The definition of tourism, importance of it, and contribution of it – what does tourism mean in our current societies, why is tourism so significant nowadays, and how can tourism contribute to better our earth?

II.    The symbiotic relationships between rural and urban areas by the means of the sustainable management of renewable natural resources and wise (sustainable) use of cultural heritages

III.    The emergence of sustainable societies, resulting from the formation and development of the above relationships
