Dear my friends in the world,
I made this 2018 annual report as my season's greetings to my friends.
Thinking of you from Japan in early 2019

I attended five international conferences and three domestic conferences in 2018.
I took sabbatical in June - November though I did not stay at a university(es) outside of Kyushu University for long. In our case, we cannot cancel our educational due but can move teaching courses to different semester(s) to keep no teaching semesters for sabbatical leave. We adopt a quarter system, i.e. Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter semesters, and I moved my teaching courses in Summer and Autumn semesters to other two semesters to keep a half-year sabbatical.
During the sabbatical, I
visited China for three weeks (seminar talks at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou City and China University of Mining and Technology in Xuzhou City, plenary talk at ICSI2018 held in Shanghai, and visiting research at Peking University),
visited Tohoku Area in
Japan for a half month (National Institute of Technology, Akita College, and
the University of Aizu foe which collaborators of my Grant-in-Aid for
Scientific Research works, and Iwate Prefectural University for the
iCAST2019 Organizing Committee meeting to transfer my experiences at
iCAST2018),
attended four international conferences and one domestic conference,
visited Australia National University for seminar talk,
visited Philippine to recruit those who want to enroll to our Human Science International Course (Doctoral Program in English), and
prepared two international conferences (iCAST2018 and 5-SENSE2018) and held them on our campus.
I organized the 9th IEEE Int. Conf. on Awareness Science and Technology (iCAST2018) and the 3rd Int. Five-Sense Symposium (5-SENSE 2018) as their General Chair on our Ohashi Campus of Kyushu University in September, 2018. Although they are independently managed using independent Organizing Committee and budget, we held them at the same building at the same dates to encourage communications between computational scientists and psychologists.
I am a volunteer serving mainly for IEEE Systems, Man & Cybernetics Society (SMC) as a member of SMC Board of Governors (2016-2018), the SMC Japan Chapter Chair (2016-2017), Chair of SMC Technical Committee on Soft Computing, and Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Cybernetic.
Dr. Varunyu Vorachart received a doctorate in
September, 2018 and became a faculty member of Walailak University in
Thailand. His dissertation, "Study
on Computational Intelligence Approaches for Design of Game Strategies,"
is downloadable.
My lab in 2019 Fiscal Year starting from April
consists of one D2 student, two M2 students, two M1 students, and two
Research students. All of them are non-Japanese. So far, three Chinese
students are contacting me to be Research students, and some of them may
join us from October, 2019.
Besides weekly lab
seminars, we organize doctoral seminars connecting five universities in
Japan and two universities outside Japan using web-conferencing. Its members
are mainly faculty members and doctoral students.
I have taught at (1) Dept. of Art and Information Design
of School of Design, (2) Human Science Course, Graduate School of Design, and
(3) Human Science International Course, Graduate School of Design. The HS Int.
Course is a Doctoral Program in English where non-Japanese can be its students,
which means that we must recruit non-Japanese who want to receive doctorates
outside Japan.
We must let possible students outside Japan know our
Doctoral Program in English. To advertise the Int. course, we have organized
Summer School since 2011 and invited non-Japanese with full our financial
supports and held one-day seminars at universities in Indonesia and Philippine
since 2013.
Prof.s Remijn and Loh, and I held one-day seminars at the
Diliman Campus and the Los Baños Campus of University of the Philippines in
March, 2018, and Prof.s Remin, Maruyama, and Ito, and I held the same one-day
seminar at the Manila Campus of University of the Philippines and visited Ateneo
de Manila University in November 2018.
I will retire Kyushu University at the end of March, 2022; three years left until my retire date. April in 2019 and 2020 are the final months to accept Doctoral students and Master students, respectively. I must plan for my second life, but it is still hard to imagine the life.
