Dear my friends in the world,

I made this 2019 annual report as my season's greetings to my friends.

Thinking of you from Japan in early 2020

Research

I attended seven international conferences (CEC2019, FC2019, ICSI2019, SCDS2019, iCAST2019, R10-HTC2019, and SSCI2019) and six domestic conferences in 2019, gave seminar talks at three universities (Yonsei University in Korea, Walailak University in Thailand, and Shanghai Maritime University in China), presented nine papers (two journal papers, four int. conference papers, and three domestic conference papers), and gave three invited talks (at two int. conferences and a domestic conference).

The topic of majority of them is on evolutionary computation. Slightly different one is a keynote speech at IEEE R10-Humanitarian Technology Conference 2019 held in Indonesia. I firstly explained why Kyushu Institute of Design was established and their unique education system, emphasized the importance of aiming to increase the quality of life of technology's users rather than technology performance in my talk introduction, and turned into the main part of Humanized Computational Intelligence. I gave an elaborate title for this talk, "Humanized Technologies: It's not just about performance."

Prof. Daming SHI of Shenzheng University visited us in January, 2019 and gave a talk on neural networks. As I was asked to join his research grant proposal and agreed it, I will visit his lab in March, 2020 for a week.

Laboratory Management

Dr. Jun YU received a doctorate in September, 2019. He was accepted as a JSPS Research Fellow in April, 2019, he has stayed at my lab as a postdoctoral researcher, conducted joint research with me, and advised my lab students since last October. He is now look for a faculty position.

One B4 student graduated in September; one research student found employment, left our university, and went back to Chine in November. As the result, my lab in the latter 2019 consists of one postdoctoral researcher, two M2 students, two M1 students, and three research students. All of them are non-Japanese. My lab in 2020FY will consists of two M2 students and three M1 student. Besides them, I will host a visiting D1 student from China in October, 2020 - September, 20021 if he gets scholarship.

I am going to let Master students challenge tough topics as their master research. Practical real world problems include tasks with high computational cost, extremely large scale, and strong constraints. I am asking them to tackle them and develop new algorithm for them.

Educational Activities

Although my seminar talks at Yonsei University, Walailak University, and Shanghai Maritime University are research activity in terms of introducing techniques, they are also educational one because they make audience students have interest in new techniques and increase their research motivation. These seminars were organized by Prof. Sung-Bar Cho, Dr. Varanyu Vorachart who was my ex-student, and Prof. QinQin Fan of each university, and I would like to express my sincere appreciation to them.

I gave a lecture talk of "Computational Intelligence + KANSEI = Design" twice at Miyazaki Nishi High School in September. The meaning of this `Design' is much wider than that in English dictionaries and origins the name of our previous university name, Kyushu Institute of Design, and current School of Design, Kyushu University. They have aimed to educate engineers/designers who can think/handle technologies from their users' point of view. This is the meaning of this `Design'. I explained this history and philosophy that is different from that of Engineering Dept. or Artistic Dept. in my lecture of high school delivery service.

Prof.s Remijn and Loh, and I held one-day seminars at the Diliman Campus and the Los Baños Campus of University of the Philippines in March, 2018, and Prof.s Remin, Maruyama, and Ito, and I held the same one-day seminar at the Manila Campus of University of the Philippines and visited Ateneo de Manila University in November 2018.

Our biggest topic would be reorganization of our undergraduate school. School of Design will change from five Departments to one Department consisting of five Coerces from April, 2020. We introduce new consolidation enrollment examination that new students are not assigned to specific Course when they enrolled but when they become sophomore from 2020 enrollment and enrollment by recommendation of High School principals from 2021 enrollment beside conventional AO (admissions office) enrollment examination and general enrollment examination.

Historically speaking, the first generation of Design started when Kyushu Inst. of Design established 50 years ago, Dept. of Environmental Design, Dept. of Industrial Design, Dept. of Visual Communication Design, and Dept. of Acoustic Design covered the Design in the first generation; the second generation started in 1990's and added Dept. of Art and Information Design targeting media design or Internet-related design according to the expand of computer to our daily life; the third generation from 2020 adds new course that educates design of non-object, i.e. social structure or social design. If it is hard for you to imagine it, imagine one example; what technologies are necessary to aging society, how to use them for the society, and what design for social systems and support system for worth life is necessary. I have educational responsibility for this new Course though I will retire at the end of 2021FY.

Private Events

Although I have made many business trips, my private trips were very rare. Unlike, my wife and I made a trip to the Fukue Island in the west end of Japan for one-night two days. Fukuoka and Fukue are connected by five daily flights, and it takes about 40 minutes. We could use weekends in July fully and enjoyed driving to visit many Churches having history of underground Christians. They were recorded to UNESCO world heritage

There are only two years till my retirement at the end of March, 2020. As I cannot image my life of the second stage, I have not design it. I know that I cannot live my remained 20 - 30 years with only hobbies.
What should I do?
