Two research papers are accepted/published in Scientific Reports, one of the Nature Research Journals, from our laboratory and Prof. Nakajima's laboratory. Here is the list of the two papers as of 15 February 2017.

  • Yoshitaka Nakajima, Kazuo Ueda, Shota Fujimaru, Hirotoshi Motomura, and Yuki Ohsaka. (2017). English phonology and an acoustic language universal, Scientific Reports, 7, 46049; doi: 10.1038/srep46049.
  • Kazuo Ueda and Yoshitaka Nakajima. (2017). An acoustic key to eight languages/dialects: Factor analyses of critical-band-filtered speech, Scientific Reports, 7, 42468; doi: 10.1038/srep42468.

These two papers are based on the results of multivariate analyses of power fluctuations of speech, which is passed through critical-band filters, simulating frequency resolution of the human auditory periphery. We found universal factors in eight languages/dialects, and that the factor scores represent British phonemes on a sonority scale.
