The reason why I chose the School of Design
Since childhood, I've loved making things and wanted to study something related to that. However, I was also interested in other fields—natural sciences, international studies, and information technologies, so I felt it would be a waste to limit my possibilities to just “art.” At that time, I was drawn to the School of Design's vision of “solving social issues through design,” which led me to decide to enroll. Among the various courses, I chose the Design Futures Course, as it seemed to offer the broadest range of learning opportunities.
My most memorable class
“Design Futures Methodology” left a strong impression.
The theme when I took the class was “Merging two or more municipalities in Kyushu to solve existing problems.” The project required us not only to design problem-solving mechanisms but also to create a new city logo, promotional materials, and more. Through a single theme, we developed a wide range of skills. There were many deliverables, but because we could shape the project according to our own interests, I remember enjoying the process immensely. The creative thinking and design methods I learned in this class continue to be very useful today.
My student life
Since the second semester of my third year, I've been studying abroad at a university in Thailand. Here, I’m taking on landscape design for the first time. Though I have little specialized knowledge, I’m applying the design methods I learned in the Design Futures Course and doing my best to keep up.
Outside of class, I actively participate in programs and field trips to deepen my interests even further.
Before studying abroad, my days in Japan were filled with classes, design assignments, and participating in the orchestra. Many assignments in the School of Design feel less like “homework” and more like opportunities to explore my interests or create something new, so I always enjoyed working on them.
Message to prospective students
Although it is called the “School of Design,” what you can study here is not limited to art and engineering. If you have curiosity, you can dive deeply into almost anything. Even if you don’t yet have a clearly defined field of interest, you will find one as you study.
You will also meet many wonderful and very unique people here. Honestly, I often felt discouraged because the people around me were so amazing. But the School of Design is truly a wonderful place, and I genuinely feel that all the hard work to get here was worth it. Whether you have a clear idea of what you want to do or not, I think you should just come to the School of Design!
