This exhibition presents the outcomes of the Graduate School of Design’s Studio Project course. From curatorial planning to exhibition design and installation, participating students took an active and leading role throughout the entire process.
Details of the exhibition are provided below. We warmly invite you to visit.
“Revisiting Shoei Yoh” introduces major works by Shoei Yoh, one of the leading architects of postwar Kyushu.
Born in Kumamoto in 1940 and based in Fukuoka for much of his career, Yoh worked across a wide range of fields—from product and interior design to architecture—playing a pivotal role in shaping Japan’s design culture. In recent years, his work has gained renewed international attention, particularly for its pioneering integration of contemporary timber architecture and digital design.
Buildings such as the Kumamoto Prefectural Outdoor Theater ASPECTA (1987) in Minami-Aso and the Oguni Town Gymnasium (1988) exemplify an architectural practice deeply responsive to local climate, culture, and landscape. Today, these works are also being reexamined from the perspective of regional revitalization.
Since its first presentation in Sydney in 2019, Revisiting Shoei Yoh has traveled to Fukuoka, Adelaide, Tokyo, and Oguni. In this Kumamoto edition—held in the architect’s birthplace—the exhibition focuses on works within the prefecture, drawing on materials from the Shoei Yoh Archive at Kyushu University. Through these materials, the exhibition traces Yoh’s creative trajectory as it emerged through dialogue with local communities and landscapes.
