Fujii Gallery celebrates three years since its first exhibition in 2021 as a “space for ideas” that encourages inspiration and nurtures creativity. Based on this concept, we will provide visitors with the opportunity to freely confront the artworks.
The works by photographer Sato Shintaro are abstract and so can be interpreted in various ways by the viewer. How do you see these works? Do any of these works trigger a memory or remind you of an image?

Sato Shintaro
Born in Tokyo in 1969, Sato Shintaro graduated from the Tokyo College of Photography in 1992. He joined Kyodo News as a staff photographer after graduating from Waseda University, School of Letters, Arts and Sciences in 1995, and has worked as a freelance photographer since 2002. He won the 7th Chiba City Art and Culture Newcomer Award (2008), the Photographic Society of Japanʼs Newcomerʼs Award (2009), and the 21st Tadahiko Hayashi Award (2012).
His work is themed around the distinctive atmosphere of the place itself – the so-called genius loci or chi-rei (soul or spirit of a place) – which is generated by the characteristics and histories of places and human activities. He depicts urban dynamics transforming like a living thing by using his unique camerawork and digital editing.
About the Fujii Gallery
The Fujii Gallery was built with a donation by Mr. Tokuo Fujii who graduated from the Faculty of Law, Kyushu University in 1964 and founded Ifuji Sangyo Co.,Ltd. in 1972. The building was constructed in 2020 and its first exhibition opened in December 2021. The building is shaped like a bird’s wing as the donor “hoped that students would spread their wings and widen their ambition”. It also follows a motif in the logo of the Kyushu University Museum.
Mr. Fujii has strongly supported Kyushu Universityʼs students and research. As well as taking these wishes into account, visitors from outside the university are welcome to visit the exhibition and we hope that people understand and enjoy this as a learning experience in Kyushu University.
