Special Talk in “Seminar on Sound Culture” Welcoming Eisuke Yanagisawa: Practices and Reflections on Field Recording

Kyushu University’s “Seminar on Sound Culture” course is pleased to host a special public talk with sound culture researcher and field recording artist Eisuke Yanagisawa.
Yanagisawa has conducted extensive research on sound cultures, particularly the use of metal gong instruments in central Vietnam, and has produced numerous recordings and video works focusing on diverse field sounds. His acclaimed book Field Recording for Beginners: Encountering the World Through Sound (2022) won both the Grand Prize and the Readers’ Award at the 1st Music Book Awards in Japan.
In this course, we explore soundscapes not only as physical phenomena but as memories inscribed in people’s lives, sounds perceived through the ears of local communities, and even lost or silenced sounds. We approach these soundscapes through their social, historical, and cultural contexts—and this talk is positioned as a key part of that inquiry.
During the talk, Yanagisawa will share his past projects using audio‐visual examples, while discussing how field recording can serve as a method for engaging with past, present, and future soundscapes—along with its potential and inherent challenges.
We warmly invite you to join us in this opportunity to reflect and listen together.
