Che Kyongfa is a curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (MOT). Her curatorial practice engages with the complexities of contemporary reality and its historical entanglements, with particular attention to migration, transnational relations, and Asian histories. Working closely with artists, curators, and art institutions across Asia and beyond, she explores how artistic practice can illuminate structures of power and social relations. In this lecture, Che will introduce selected exhibitions from her curatorial work and reflect on her approach to exhibition-making.
Che’s recent exhibition projects at MOT include major solo exhibitions such as unset on-set by Wendelien van Oldenborgh (2022-23) and A for Agents by Ho Tzu Nyen (2024). She also co-curated the group exhibition Choreographies of the Everyday (2025), organized on the occasion of MOT’s 30th anniversary. She is currently one of the three curators of the upcoming 16th Gwangju Biennale (2026), with Ho Tzu Nyen serving as artistic director.
Born in Hyogo Prefecture in 1977, Che received an MA in Art History and Theory (20th Century) from Goldsmiths College, University of London (2001), and completed a post-MA program in Critical Studies at Malmö Art Academy, Sweden (2005). Before joining MOT in 2013, she worked as an independent curator and co-curated numerous international exhibitions, including OK Video Festival (Jakarta, 2005), The Demon of Comparisons (Amsterdam, 2009), and Omnilogue: Journey to the West (New Delhi, 2012).
