The reason why I chose the Graduate School of Design
I wanted to study spatial design, and I was looking for a field that was not too constrained by the rigidity of architecture and not too heavily leaning toward art. I felt that Geiko would allow me to engage with both artistic sensibilities and practical approaches to creating spaces, which is why I decided to pursue my studies here. Additionally, I was drawn to the Environmental Design Course because it allows me to study not only architecture, but also green spaces, landscapes, cities, and other spatial scales. I thought that this would help me learn to think about space from broader and more diverse perspectives.
My most memorable class
The “Model Creation of Western Historical Building” project in my graduate Studio Project class left a strong impression. Our group of about ten students, including international students, worked together to create a model of Sainte-Chapelle. Because of language barriers, there were moments when it was difficult to communicate our ideas clearly, but as we cooperated and moved the project forward, I felt our friendships deepen. It became a valuable experience in learning through collaboration with people from diverse backgrounds.
My student life
I was active in a club called "nullken," which creates independent films and theater spaces for our school festival. Everything from scriptwriting to filming and screening is handled entirely by ourselves. I was in charge of designing and building the theater space. It was a valuable experience to conceptualize and physically create a space. At the same time, working with teammates who shared and supported my vision taught me both the importance of collaboration and the joy of creating spaces together.
Message to prospective students
First, take your time exploring what you want to do and what interests you.
If those interests lead you to Geiko, you’ll surely find new discoveries and encounters.
At Geiko, I feel surrounded by many peers who genuinely respect each other and support “what you want to do” and “what you love.” It is a warm environment where you can freely take on new challenges.
Believe in “what you love” and move forward!
