The reason why I chose the Graduate School of Design

I originally studied materials at a technical college. While I enjoyed the academic environment of logical thinking and pursuing so-called science subjects, I wanted even more to apply that logical thinking to fields without definite answers. That desire led me to study design, so I transferred into the School of Design and then continued to the Graduate School of Design.

My most memorable class

One memorable class was “Innovation Design Theory and Practice II,” which I took in my third year of undergraduate studies. It’s a signature class of the Industrial Design Course, where students create their own stationery products from concept development to production. I had wanted to take the class even before transferring. For me, who had spent years focusing solely on academic study at technical college, designing something from scratch was completely new and very challenging. Yet, it also allowed me to immerse myself in the “joy of thinking.”

My student life

Beyond studying design in classes, I take art-related classes and engage in creative work through extracurricular activities. Many GEIKO students are deep thinkers with unique perspectives, and I’m constantly inspired during creative sessions. The process of repeatedly thinking, discussing, and rethinking a theme that has no fixed answer and ultimately expressing my own world through my final work is a kind of enjoyment I couldn’t experience at technical college.

Message to prospective students

The School of Design offers a creative kind of “joy of thinking” that feels different from engineering. Transferring from a technical college to the School of Design may seem like an unusual path, and it’s natural to feel anxious before and after the transition. But don't forget your spirit of challenge. Don't be afraid to throw yourself into various things.
