Traces of Residence offers insights into the ever-growing archive of the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum’s (FAAM) Artist-In-Residence Program by looking back at three art projects from its history, each presenting a distinct perspective on life in Fukuoka. Through interviews with former residency artists reflecting on their time in the city and archival materials, the exhibition sheds light on artistic processes and traces the various forms of interaction that developed between artists and local publics.
The artworks revisited are Kuroshio I (2005) by Wu Mali, We All Know Each Other (2007) by Phuttiphong Aroonpheng, and Where Do We Go From Here? (2009) by Wei Leng Tay. All three artists worked with participatory approaches, and each project was shaped through engagement with diverse individuals and communities. Together, they offer portraits of Fukuoka at particular moments in time, conveyed through different artistic practices and social contexts.
*The project was supported by the KAKENHI research project Working Across Borders: The Art Production and Artistic Networks of Artists from Overseas in Japan since the Turn of the Millennium (Project No. 25K03752; Principal Investigator: Ariane Beyn).
