An exhibition by artist Kosuke Nagata and related events will be held during “BOOKUOKA 2026 in Kyushu University, Hakozaki Satellite” as part of a collaborative research project involving Associate Professor Madoka Yuki of the Faculty of Design, Kyushu University.
Nagata has created works in a range of forms, including video, installation, and performance, drawing on historical and social research into food culture and food production.
For this exhibition, Nagata will present an installation that draws on botanical publications held by the Kyushu University Museum. Drinks will be served as part of the installation. By viewing the materials and experiencing the work through their senses, including taste, visitors are invited to reflect on the histories behind it.
The program also features a screening at 6:30 p.m. of Nagata’s《Fire in Water》(2025), a documentary video essay based on research into rice cultivation and brewing on the Korean Peninsula during Japanese colonial rule. Through the lens of alcohol production, the work explores the processes of colonization and the traces they have left behind. Following the screening, Nagata will join Professor Misako Mishima of the Kyushu University Museum for a cross-disciplinary conversation.
We invite you to explore new perspectives that emerge when contemporary art and academic research come together.

Kosuke Nagata
Born in Aichi Prefecture in 1990, Kosuke Nagata is an artist based in Kanagawa Prefecture. His practice explores the binary oppositions that underpin modern thought—such as self and other, nature and culture, and body and environment—as well as the ambiguities inherent in these distinctions. He works across photography, video, installation, and other media.
In recent years, Nagata has presented video essays and course-meal performances addressing such issues as the formation of national identity through food culture, bodily techniques and power relations embedded in dining practices, and the management of animal and plant life within systems of food production.
His major exhibitions include the solo exhibition Eat (gallery αM, Tokyo, 2020), as well as group exhibitions such as Seeing as Though Touching: The 19th Exhibition of New Cosmos of Photography (Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, 2022) and Aichi Triennale (Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art, 2019).
