The reason why I chose the Graduate School of Design

I chose this graduate school because I wanted to explore how light can influence people’s emotions and behavior. At our faculty, design is approached not just from form, but also from “how people perceive it” and “its relationship with the environment.” While working as a lighting designer, I felt the need to deepen my expertise and decided to return to study at the laboratory I belonged to during my undergraduate years. The environment here is well-equipped for advancing research through experiments and engagement with actual facilities.

My most memorable class

“Environmental Information” was a class that sparked my interest in the relationship between space and human emotions. Learning about environmental psychology, how spatial and environmental conditions influence human behavior and feelings, changed the way I view space design. Additionally, in “Spatial Design Practice,” I had the opportunity to take on real design challenges and work on a wide range of topics, including urban planning. Receiving feedback from professors helped me deepen my ideas, and that experience left a strong impression.

My student life

I usually attend my seminar remotely and visit the nursery school that serves as my research site for observation. Conversations with my professor and seminar members often provide me with new ideas and perspectives. As an undergraduate student, I also had opportunities to participate in exhibitions and external projects, which allowed me to turn my ideas into tangible forms. I still stay connected with students from other departments and peers active in society. Being exposed to diverse values continues to deepen my learning.

Message to prospective students

This faculty supports your “curiosities” and “passions,” encouraging you to explore them. It's okay if you don't have prior knowledge at first. Cherish that feeling of “I wonder about this.” As you study, you will experience many moments when your perspective and way of thinking begin to shift. For those who enjoy creating things, observing, or are interested in the relationship between human life and the environment, this is the place I highly recommend.
