OPEN CALL – Listening Score #1 Workshop

Listening to sound, heightening our awareness of sensations on the skin, and walking through the city. This workshop and public showing explore how the sensations and actions that emerge through these practices—as well as the things and memories they bring back to us—can be recorded as “scores” or sets of instructions.

Listening Scores is a project that observes the presence and atmosphere of the city through sound and the body, translating individual experiences into words, graphics, movements, sounds, and simple instructions. For the first edition, we will invite New York-based dancer and performer Maho Ogawa.

The workshop will begin with warm-up exercises using the body and voice, followed by sonic meditation. We will then walk through the city of Fukuoka and share what we notice along the way: sensations on the skin, sounds that catch our attention, memories that surface, and other impressions. To communicate these experiences—which are not always easy to put into words—to others, participants will create “scores” or sets of instructions using words and drawings. We will then work with the collected scores to recompose them into a performance.

No professional experience in music or dance is required. Anyone interested in sound, the body, walking, observing the city, performance, sound art, or related practices is welcome to participate.
Following the two-day workshop and a rehearsal, we will also hold a public showing on Thursday, October 29.
Priority will be given to participants who are able to attend the full schedule below. However, if this is difficult, participation in the two workshop days only is also possible.

*A public showing will also be open to those who wish to attend the showing only. Information on registration for the showing will be provided on this page at a later date.

Guest Profile

Maho Ogawa

Choreographer / interdisciplinary collaborative artist

After working in Tokyo for ten years under the name Suiso Ogawa, Maho Ogawa has been based in New York since 2011. Her practice crosses a wide range of approaches, including bodily expression, choreography, video, text, computer software, and socially engaged art, through which she creates choreographic works, moving-image works, and installations.
Her work focuses on discovering the body’s inherent capacity for communication by examining how individual bodies are consciously and unconsciously shaped by their surrounding environments.
She holds an MFA from the Performance and Interactive Media Arts (PIMA) program at Brooklyn College, City University of New York. In the United States, her work has received support from institutions and programs including Movement Research, the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, and Princeton University.

Organizer Profile

Tomoko Hojo

Sound artist / Assistant Professor, Department of Acoustic Design, Faculty of Design, Kyushu University
Tomoko Hojo is a sound artist and researcher working internationally with listening, voice, silence, and the body. Moving between performance, participatory projects, and archival research, she is interested in voices that are difficult to hear, forms of expression that are easily overlooked, and things that only appear faintly or partially.
In 2024, she developed the participatory project Recordari, which explored how listening, bodily sensations, memory, and encounters with place could be translated into simple scores and shared with others. Several ideas that later developed into Listening Scores were already explored within this project.
Please note that photographs and video may be taken during the workshop for documentation purposes.
Some of the scores and documentation created through the workshop may be included in a digital score collection to be developed as part of the project. Participants will be contacted again for permission before any of their work is included.
