International Initiatives: Design in Japan/Understanding Japanese Design

Kyushu University Faculty of Design is promoting the internationalization of its education with the aim of becoming a global center of design education and research. New graduate school curriculum starting in 2022 respects the diversity of values which is essential in producing creative and innovative design, and promote diversity among graduate students from different cultural backgrounds.

“Design in Japan/Understanding Japanese Design” is a special course that started from 2020. Teachers from diverse specialized fields, such as architecture, sound, art, and product introduce Japanese design from their respective points of view. There are few opportunities to learn design gathered from such a wide variety of fields.
This course applies to students at the Kyushu University School of Design and Graduate School of Design. All classes are conducted in English, so international students and students interested in international exchange can learn wide range of Japanese design through discussion.
This course is conducted as part of the “Program for Understanding Japan”.
