Internationalization Initiatives: Design in Japan B/Understanding Japanese Design B 2022-23

Design in Japan B/Understanding Japanese Design B is a new elective open to students from all schools and graduate schools of Kyushu University, including international students and exchange students. It is conducted in English.

The purpose is to learn about and practically engage in Japanese Design from various subjects and perspectives and to nurture students who can communicate about Japanese Design with a deep insight into the future.

This subject offers lectures and workshops, including an excursion, pertaining to five aspects of art and design in Japan. The contents focus on the body and sensory perception and will examine both traditional and contemporary design and art practices, including scent, sound and music, dance and movement. Other than our own faculty members, we have also invited professionals in koto, butoh, and the phenomenology of scent to give lectures and hands-on sessions. Students also went on an excursion to Yame City to learn to make traditional incense from the experts. After learning the various knowledge and practice, students worked in groups to create their own design/art/music work and put together a final presentation event, “The Sense Festival,” which was opened to the public on January 22, 2023, at the Multi Purpose Hall. The event consisted of exhibits and performances for the audience to experience the mix or separation of senses focused on hearing, smelling, and feeling.

This subject received an overwhelming response from 38 interested applicants. As we have a class size limit, we selected 25 students and 4 auditors. The selected students came from 9 countries: Japan, Brazil, China, France, Germany, Guatemala, Indonesia, Iran, and Myanmar. Of these, 90% of the students were international, and 10% were local. The uniqueness of this class which is made up of students from different countries, cultures, and design backgrounds, provided different perspectives as they interacted and worked towards a common goal. Thus, enriching their learning experiences.

The Faculty of Design will continue to promote internationalization, creating more opportunities for exchanges with international students and classes taught in English.
