【Exhibition】 Hitoshi Kuriyama Repetition/Difference/Boundary

To celebrate the grand opening of the Design Library, we are pleased to present a series of exhibitions by four artists from the Graduate School of Design and the Faculty of Design, Kyushu University. The artists will present their works in the new Visual and Audio Lounge, which was built in conjunction with the renovation. The fourth exhibition with the title Repetition/Difference/Boundary presents works by Associate Professor Hitoshi Kuriyama of the Faculty of Design.

The main focus of Hitoshi Kuriyama is directed towards the exploration of seemingly contradictory concepts of “nothingness” and “existence”, or the fluctuations that exist between them. This pursuit involves a diverse range of knowledge from various fields such as physics, engineering, biology, and philosophy. It takes an experimental approach, using materials and phenomena like light, sound, water, gasses, and vacuum as its subjects, and elevates them into forms of artistic expression. What distinguishes Kuriyama’s efforts is that they are rooted in scientific phenomena.

In this exhibition, an installation using light, video, and sound will present a space with a complex interplay of light. We hope that visitors will enjoy this new thought experiment, and wonder how such a space will be received by viewers, and what differences will arise from the individual images they evoke.
