In September 2024, a groundbreaking collaborative course, “Global Design Project Ⅳ”, was held between Kyushu University, Dalian University of Technology, and Beijing Institute of Technology. This innovative initiative was made possible with the support of Design center, China & Northeast Asia Company, Panasonic Corporation and Product Planning center, Smart Life Division, China & Northeast Asia Company, Panasonic Corporation.
The course was structured in two parts. The first phase took place from September 12 to 14 at Kyushu University’s Ohashi Campus, where students engaged in workshops and conducted market research. The second phase was held from September 26 to 28 at Beijing Institute of Technology, featuring additional workshops and culminating in a final presentation session.
The theme of this collaborative course was “Students’ Perspectives on Marriage and the Design of Living Spaces/Home Appliances.” Participants explored various partnership models, including traditional marriage, choosing not to marry, being married but living separately, and cohabiting without marriage. From these diverse viewpoints, students proposed innovative ideas for living spaces and home appliances.
Throughout the course, students were encouraged to envision future partnership models from their own perspectives. They engaged in lively group discussions with peers from different universities, fostering international exchange and creative thinking. These interactions led to stimulating debates on potential designs for living spaces and home appliances that could cater to evolving lifestyle needs.
The final presentation session showcased numerous original proposals, characteristic of the students’ fresh perspectives. These presentations sparked meaningful discussions and left a strong impression on all participants. Some of the proposed concepts showed potential to become integral parts of our daily lives in the near future.
The trilateral collaborative program between Kyushu University, Dalian University of Technology, and Beijing Institute of Technology provided a valuable opportunity for Asian students to work together and develop creative solutions. Japanese and Chinese students enhanced their design skills while learning about each other’s values and cultural differences, simultaneously fostering an international perspective distinct from Western interactions. This initiative holds the potential to present new visions to the global community, particularly relevant in today’s uncertain world. We aim to continue strengthening the bonds between the three universities and generating innovative ideas from Asia.
