Sound Culture Seminar Special Talk with Kenta Tanaka: Intersections of the City, Soundscape, and Sound Art

This year, as part of the course “Sound Culture Seminar” offered by the Acoustic Design Course, School of Design, Kyushu University, we are pleased to host a public talk by Kenta Tanaka, guitarist, sound artist, and urban musician.
Tanaka has been exploring the possibilities of “Urban Composition,” a practice that applies various phenomena found in the city to music and sound art, creating sound with the city as its central theme.
In this course, we seek to reconsider everyday environmental sounds not merely as background sounds, but as cultural phenomena connected to society, history, memory, and embodied experience. This talk will explore the current state of soundscape thought and field recording practice.
The talk will examine how soundscape theory, which has envisioned possible ideals of acoustic environments, has changed over time, and how it has influenced the practice of field recording. It will also introduce examples of “Sonic Urbanism,” an emerging movement, particularly in Europe, that intervenes in urban sound environments, while considering the intersections between the city, soundscape, and sound art.
How can we listen to, record, and transform the sounds of the city? We warmly invite you to join us for this talk, which will reconsider the urban environment through sound.
